Perlite is a volcanic mineral that expands 4 to 20 times when exposed to heat. Thanks to the unique properties of perlite, the range of its use in caring for and growing plants is also quite wide – both when improving heavy and clay soils, and when using perlite for growing plants in hydroponics. Perlite is an ideal soil amendment when added to potting soil: it provides superior and much-needed aeration, better water retention, and improved drainage. Mixing soil with perlite produces a soil or substrate mixture.
