(Centranthus ruber) Red valerian is also known as valerian spurge. This extremely attractive plant produces light red or scarlet flowers. Their charm and fragrance are highly prized by bees, butterflies and moths. By planting “kiss me” (another name for the plant) in your garden, you will enjoy the beauty and scent of its flowers and various species of flying insects.
Growing devil’s beard or Jupiter’s beard (this plant does have many names) should begin in the spring. The seeds are sown in a seed bed or in boxes. Note that the plants germinate rather late and at an irregular rate. Young plants are transplanted to permanent plots in August and September at intervals of 40-50 cm. Red valerian will bloom the following May for a long time, until the end of August. To fully enjoy the beautiful red valerian inflorescences, you should plant them in a sunny or partially shady site in permeable, moderately dry and calcium rich soil.
