(Beta vulgaris var. cicla Vog.) Mangold is a biennial belonging to the Mareva family. It does not overwinter in northern regions and is cultivated as an annual plant. This crop can grow in almost any area. Well tolerates cold. It is recommended to grow chard on medium-heavy soils rich in nutrients (especially nitrogen). Seeds are sown in late April – early May at a depth of 3-4 cm. The width of row spacing is 50 cm. In the second half of May, thinning is carried out, leaving 30 cm between plants. During the growing season loosen the soil around the plants, water in dry weather. Leafy chard is harvested in early summer while it is still young. During the season, make up to 5 cuts, leaving young leaves. With petioled chard, the petioles and veins are cut a little later, from mid-August to fall. Before the arrival of hard frosts, the plants with roots are ripped out and placed in deep greenhouses or transferred in boxes to the cellar. The newly developing leaves can then be harvested until winter.
