(Plantago coronopus L. ) In spring we often take advantage of “nature’s favors” – we gather wild herbs for food. These are old habits, but even nowadays scientists are not slumbering – botanists find edible species among “wild plants”, and breeders improve them and turn them into cultivated ones. Thus, from the numerous family Plantain family, and count in it about 270 species, an edible species – deer plantain (Plantago coronopus). The plant is quite different from our usual plantain growing everywhere. Green, smooth, lanceolate, lance-shaped, with small sprouts leaves of plantago coronopus are collected in a dense semi-upright rosette with a diameter of about 15 cm, height 20 cm. During the summer, up to 1.5 kg/m2 of leaves are harvested, which can be used for salads and soups. It withstands small frosts. Sow densely: 10×10 cm.
