Oilseed radish is suitable for growing as green manure due to its large green mass and deep root system.
The plant is characterized by rapid growth: 35–40 days after germination it produces 25–30 t/ha of green mass. In terms of soil selection, oilseed radish is suitable for growing on loamy and sandy loam soils. Root diameter is 2 – 3 cm, depth up to 60 – 80 cm. Stem is 80 – 120 cm high, highly branched, foliage is strong in the first half of the growing season. The flowers are white, of different shades. The fruit is a pod 4–8 cm long, with 6–8 seeds. Germination and mass formation of rue do not require much heat. A temperature of 3 – 4°C is required for germination; it can withstand temperatures down to – 6°C during spring frosts. The optimal germination temperature is +7-9°C. When using green manure, oilseed radish increases the biological activity of the soil; the roots secrete phytoncides that carry out phytosanitary work in the soil. Growing oilseed radish for adding green mass makes it possible to increase the quantity and quality of organic matter in the soil. Sowing rate: 25 kg/ha, Sowing depth: 2 – 3 cm
