(Salvia sclarea) Nutmeg sage is considered the head of the floral and culinary kingdom.
A perennial essential oil and ornamental plant 60-100 cm tall with large pink-purple flowers gathered in a panicle and large (length and width 10-15 cm) and pubescent gray-green leaves. It blooms in June-August for a month. The growing season is 95-100 days. Light-loving, drought-tolerant and heat-loving, undemanding to soils. The plant does not tolerate return spring frosts, so it should be covered during this period.
Cultivated by direct sowing into the ground or seedling method. Sowing is carried out under winter or early spring. The area of feeding plants 20×40 cm. On seedlings sowing is carried out in late March, planting – in late May. Young leaves are used as a seasoning for salads, fish and meat dishes. Nutmeg sage is a perennial, heat- and at the same time frost-resistant culture. The stem is erect, the leaves have a pleasant aroma reminiscent of the smell of ambergris.
